TOKYO (AP) - "I don't like Sushi and I don't like losing." Those were the opening comments made by newly acquired Surfrider Ben Harnisch after a disappointing loss at the hands of his new rival, the Tokyo Tsunami. It was a tough welcome, as he had to face defending Cy Young award winner Denny McLain in a great pitcher's duel. After a rough 1st inning giving up two runs on an Alan Donnersberger double, Harnisch settled down and didn't give up another run for a complete game loss. He struck out 8 and walked none in solid, if unsatisfying performance.

When asked about his new starter's performance, Manager Jeff Spicoli said, "Dude. You gotta love a guy who pitches a helluva game like that and isn't just satisfied. He's like a competition surfer not just satisfied with catching the wave... he wants to shred it up. He wants to win. I love it!"

When asked about what he thought of the trade, Harnisch stated, "I'm very grateful that Rick [Gregg] allowed me an opportunity to chase another Pennant. He knows how badly I want a ring. We gave it a great run in Johannesburg and the fans were great! They were supportive and friendly! It's just that the Hit Dome (Johannesburg's home stadium, The Steel Mill) just wasn't friendly. I've never been to Tahiti and look forward to the beaches and the women. I'm sure the fans will be great as well."

On his new teammates, Harnisch gushed, "From what I've seen so far, these guys are all professionals. I met a few of the guys [Mark] Mercedes when he played in Joliet (Jackhammers, Johannesburg's LOW Minor team) and I pitched against Albert Flynn when he was in Amity. Everyone has been really cool so far. No disrespect to my old team, but I just love pitching with this defense. Guys like Joey (Monk) and Mark (Mercedes) really take a lot of pressure off me. I feel like I don't have to strike out everyone now to get the win... I can just try to hit my spots and I know even if they hit the ball, my guys will have a good chance to make a play!" He winked as he walked away and said, "I hope I can get some support next time, FELLAS!"

This was another trade where the Surfriders mortgaged their future for a shot at the Blizzard Crown. It hasn't paid off so far, as they were eventually swept by defending Barnes Champ Tokyo, but they did play the Tsunami tough and with a lot of pep. It's a long season with more transactions and changes sure to follow. Regardless of how it all ends, it should be an entertaining ride.
