SAN JOSE (AP) - Some highlights from the 2003 Weaver League season...

DOWN TO THE WIRE IN THE WILD, WILD ROEHM! - Once again, the Roehm Division of the Blizzard League provided us with a great pennant race! The Rio de Janerio Capybaras got off to a slow start in 2003, but by midseason they had begun to make their move towards the top of the division and their bitter rivals, the Havana Cigars. The two teams took turns at the top down the stretch, and heading into the last day of the regular season the teams were dead even with 106 wins each! Rio faced off with the Planet X Aliens. Eventual Cy Young Award winner Addie Joss took the mound for the Capys and showed why he's the best pitcher in the BL, giving up just one run on five hits in the biggest game of the season as the Capys won 5-1 to clinch at least a tie for first! Meanwhile in Kingston, Jamaica, the Cigars were battling the Rastafarians. The Cigars learned that Rio had won their game as they headed into the ninth inning. Down 1-0 and faced with the realization that they could be down to the last three outs of their season, the Cigars managed to scratch out a run to keep their hopes alive! The game went extra innings, but Babe Ruth drove a stake through the hearts of Cuban baseball fans everywhere as he blasted a two out home run off of Lou Burgos to end the Cigars season. Rio had revenge on Havana, which had ousted them on the second to last day of the season in 2002, but watch out as these two rivals square off once again in 2004!

DOUBLE TAKE FOR BOB DAVIS! - When the 2003 Weaver League Awards were announced, there was little surprise that Addie Joss had won his second straight BL Cy Young Award (although Cy Young himself seemed a little bent that once again he did not win his own award), and few people could argue with Mickey Mantle took home the BL MVP for the third time in three seasons. But everyone was caught off guard when it was announced that Bob Davis of the Bombay Elephants had won the IL Rookie of the Year for a second straight season! Amity rookie pitcher Atilla Szanyi was not amused. "Dude, this freakin' sucks the big one!" said Szanyi after it was announced that Davis had received the award." He's not a rookie! I'm a rookie, I deserved it more than Davis does, that's for sure!" When asked about a second year player getting the ROTY Award, the Weaver League's own Dreaded Computer stated, "The rookies in the IL this year just really, really sucked so I decided to give the award to Davis again. What's that punk from Amity complaining about? I don't care if he was a rookie, he had a 7.26 ERA for God's sake! I'm not givin' crap to a guy with a 7.26 ERA! I'm the Dreaded Computer, dammit! Nobody should question me! I can send your team straight into the crapper for a LONG time if I want to, ya know!"

McGWIRE & SOSA, MEET SANDERS & MANTLE! - In the Weaver League's version of "Ultimate Home Run Derby", Reggie Sanders of the Kabul Mujahadeen and Mickey Mantle of the Belfast Bombers struck fear into the hearts of opposing pitchers throughout 2003 as they became the first players in modern Weaver League history to reach the 60 Home Run plateau! Sanders had a outside change at reaching 70, but he went the last week of the season without hitting a homer so he had to settle for 65, which is now the new Weaver League record. Mantle couldn't quite catch Sanders in the home run chase, but his BL record 62 HR along with 156 RBI and a .365 average were enough to give him the BL MVP Award for the third straight season!
