DETROIT (AP) - Rumours have been swirling in the Detroit area that Motown Miracles closer-turned-starter Alex Panchio wants to be traded. Panchio himself was on a local talk radio show, and had the following comments.

"I don't know what they're thinking, putting me in the rotation", said Panchio. "I'm good for four innings tops and then my arm starts to turn to jelly. Why they're putting me out there to start games is a complete mystery. I've got 154 career saves for this organisation and if they're not going to use me in my best role I'd like to go somewhere where I can be a closer and get chances to save games."

Manager Ryne Sandberg, who made the decision to start Panchio last week, was not available for comment. GM Cory Muzyka would not be drawn into a public confrontation with Panchio on the matter.

"Alex is Alex, he's going to say what he thinks and that's fine. The decision is in the hands of Ryne - if he wants Alex to start, Alex starts and that's final. None of the other players have had any complaints about Ryne's management, in fact all the reports I've received have been very positive."

In other news the Miracles have appointed Tony Gwynn as hitting coach, Kenny Lofton as first base coach, and Cal Ripken Jr as third base coach. All are expected to arrive in Motown to begin their duties before next week's games.
