DENVER (AP) - The New York Nukes have regained their usual spot atop the IL Lockwood Division after spending time in last place for the first time since moving to New York. The Nukes seemed to be snakebit the first month of the season, seemingly unable to win close games and compiling a horrible one-run game record. Aside from Randy Johnson, the rest of the starting pitchers were unable to put together a string of quality starts to start a decent winning streak. Along with injuries to Ty Cobb and Chipper Jones, the Nukes sank to last place.

After the horrible start, the team's fortunes have taken a turn for the better. The Nukes addressed their need for depth in their starting pitching, acquiring Lord Byron II and Tom Gordon (along with outfielder Mark Whiten) from the London Substitutes for young outfielders Miguel Mejia, Jose Guillen, and the team's first round Amateur Draft pick. Since the trade the Nukes have steadily risen back to the top of the division. Ty Cobb, looking for his first batting championship despite leading the IL in career average, currently leads the IL at .372, and Gary Sheffield continues to consistantly produce with his 32 HR and 85 RBI. They'll need to keep it up if they're to hold off the upstart Los Angeles Riots and capture the Lockwood Divsion Title for the fourth time in five seasons!
