RIO DE JANERIO (AP) - After dominating the regular season by setting a Blizzard League record with 122 wins, the Rio de Janerio Capybaras held off an inspired comeback by the Los Angeles Riots in the Weaver Series to win the 2004 Weaver Cup of Ultimate Power in an intense seven game series!

The Capys were truly dominant in the regular season. In the end they fell short of the Amity White Sharks Weaver League record of 127 wins, but their 122 wins were enough to easily hold off the Havana Cigars to take what had traditionally been a tight Roehm Division pennant race. The Rio pitching duo of Addie Joss and Chad Ogea finished just short of the 30 win plateau. Both pitchers went into the final week of the season with 29 wins, but both came up just short in the bids for 30 wins. Joss would end up taking his third straight BL Cy Young Award, going 29-7 with a 1.04 ERA and 373 K's! Sammy Sosa led the offense for the Capys, as his .353 average, 33 homers, and 112 RBI were good enough to bring home the BL MVP!

In the BLCS, the Capys faced off against the defending Weaver Series Champions, the Belfast Bombers! Belfast took the first game, but Rio strung together three straight victories to take a 3-1 series lead! In typical Belfast fashion, the Bombers came surging back to force a seventh game and it looked like Belfast had another miracle up their sleves! But Addie Joss showed that he is money in the bank in the big game, shutting down the potent Belfast offense in the deciding game to lead the Capys to their third Weaver Series appearance!

In the Weaver Series, Rio took advantage of some shaky Los Angeles pitching to take a three games to two series lead. The Riots managed to come back to tie the series by defeating Chad Ogea, but the Capys still seemed to have everything going for them heading into Game Seven. They had the dominant Addie Joss going for them in front of a frenzied sellout home crowd. But after three innings, disaster struck for Joss as he was forced to leave the game with an inflamed ligament in his pitching elbow! All bets were off and the series was up for grabs! The Rio bullpen came up huge though, stepping into Joss' shoes and shutting down the L.A. offense as the Capys went into the ninth inning clinging to a 1-0 lead! The Capys were one out away from winning the Weaver Cup, but Raul Mondesi came up huge for the Riots by doubling in Ken Griffey Jr., tying the score and bringing the Riots back from the dead! But in the bottom of the inning, Mike Sweeney became a Rio de Janerio legend with one swing of the bat! With one out and two men on, Sweeney delivered with a three run, championship clinching homer! The Series was over, and the Rio de Janerio Capybaras had won their second Weaver Cup of Ultimate Power! The ensuing celebration was wild even by Rio standards!
