MOUNTIES CAP SUCCESSFUL SEASON WITH WIN

VANCOUVER (AP) - The Vancouver Mounties today capped their most successful season in franchise history with a 2-1 extra innings win over the Havana Cigars. Their 89th win, a franchise record, was a stellar game finished off by a Robb Reuschel walk-off homer in the bottom of the eleventh.

"I wasn't the least bit nervous", said Reuschel. "I stepped up and took a couple of balls out and away from the pitcher (Bill Wolfe), and then he had to come across the plate. I waited on a fastball and took a big swing at it. I hit it hard, and it went out."

GM Cory Muzyka, who was seen jumping up and down in the owner's box after Reuschel's heroics, was overjoyed that the Mounties could cap their most successful season in history with a big win over a division rival.

"This was a huge win for us - not only was it a win over a big club like Havana, but it was also the icing on the cake for me personally. We had a lot of ups and downs this season, and while we made a lot of moves to be competitive this year we are still going to be a very tough team next season and in the future," said Muzyka. "I have to give a lot of credit to Pavel (Chmura) and to Ron (Patrick Jr.). They came in here and led this team from day one, and they both deserve a lot of credit for this season."

"Pitching wise it's hard to look past the contribution that our top four starters brought this year - they all had at least 10 wins and over .500 records, and they all had ERA's under 3.00", said Muzyka. "They all did an outstanding job for us."

"Rookie outfielder Orlando Tracy was also a big story for us - he finished the season with a .263 average and 18 homers in only 430 at-bats... he'll be a big part of our outfield in the future."

All in all, a very successful season for the Mounties comes to an end - and while there might be some grumbling about the fact that the team gave up a bunch of very good young players to acquire the talent to push them over the hump and get them to this stage, nobody in Vancouver seems to mind too much. The team's broken .500, the team has had their winningest season in franchise history, and the team has its first 20-game winner. The future's so bright...
