EDMONTON (AP) - Edmonton Orcas fans have had their fair share of fine plays at the plate in recent seasons. Unfortunately they usually end catastrophically.

You may recall catcher Serafin Quintanar missed all of last season after his early call up because of a devistating home plate collision. Now, recently acquired rookie shortstop Roy David will miss the rest of the season because of a similar collision at home. It was the 5th inning, David on second after designated hitter Kelly Laskey sacrificed him over. Second Baseman Dave Moore lined a single into right field, where Stockholm outfielder Danny Bautista made a nice scoop and throw home. David slipped as he rounded third and looked like dead meat, but barreled into Swede catcher Tom Tulips hoping to jar the ball loose. Sure enough, the ball trickled out and he was called safe. However, not only did David break his kneecap on the play, but Tulip's elbow as well.

"Perhaps one of the glaring problems with rookies is that they think they are indestructable," remarked Orcas coach Robin Yount after the game. "Everything else can be taught. Getting broke a lesson you learn the hard way."
